I personally wouldn't take tiny kids up there, but several people were. The area around the lake offers nice camping and beautiful mountain vista's. There was something dead near the trail, the smell was absolutely overwhelming, probably less than a mile up. Silver Lake is a great day hike that meanders through groves of aspens, meadows and over clear mountain streams. Completely uphill in the first half, but easy going down on the way back! The trail passes by some boulders, crosses a stream, climbs up 3-4 long switchbacks, and finally reaches the lake after only 2.2 miles (one way).
